Security and Safety Section (SSS)
The Security and Safety Section (SSS) is a common service provided at the Vienna International Centre (VIC). The history of the VIC Security goes back to the early days of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). In 1979, when both organizations moved into the Vienna International Centre (VIC), the two existing Security units were amalgamated and the responsibilities for security and safety on the premises taken over by United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). Given the extra-territorial status of the VIC complex, the Section protects persons and property as the Austrian authorities are not authorized to operate within the VIC perimeter. SSS provides 24-hour security and fire-prevention services to identify possible threats to persons and property, and assesses the level of protection needed. Access to VIC is limited to persons holding valid passes issued by the Section. Within the premises, security operations concentrate on identifying possible safety, security and fire hazards. SSS receives notifications from Member States regarding radiological emergencies after normal working hours and activates the Emergency Response System of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
