We currently offer the following intermediate to advanced level courses:

RUSSIAN REGULAR 1

Objectives: By the end of the level, participants are expected to acquire the following skills:

  • learn the Russian alphabet, rules for reading, and intonation patterns,
  • write in cursive,
  • introduce him/herself,
  • understand and master elementary communication techniques: greetings, farewells, apologies, thanks, habitual politeness formulas,
  • understand, ask and answer simple questions concerning family, jobs, daily activities, free time, possessions, cities, and location,
  • read and understand texts, approx. 150 words long, containing up to 1-2% unfamiliar words and syntactic constructions, and answer questions related to them,
  • write essays, 5-7 sentences long, on subjects learnt: family, daily activities, free time and a town/city.

  • Grammar: gender of nouns; plural of nouns; nouns in the nominative and prepositional cases; possessive and demonstrative pronouns; personal pronouns in the nominative and accusative cases; adverbs; 2 types of verb conjugation; verbs in the present and past tenses; use of construction уменяесть...; adverbs;most common conjunctions and prepositions; use of prepositions B and НА in the prepositional case

Objectives: By the end of the level, participants are expected to acquire the following skills:

  • talk about following topics: plans and interests, likes and dislikes, climate and weather, daily routine, nationalities, foreign countries and languages, holidays, food and drinks, clothes, home, and time,
  • count to 200,
  • express an impression or an opinion,
  • understand, ask and answer simple questions related to subjects being learnt,
  • read and understand texts, approx. 250 words long, containing up to 2% unfamiliar words and syntactic constructions, and answer questions related to them,
  • write essays, 7-10 sentences long, on subjects learnt: home, daily routine, and holidays.

  • Grammar: nouns in the accusative and prepositional cases (with preposition O); adjectives in the nominative, accusative, and prepositional cases; the accusative case of time; irregular verbs in the present and past tenses; superlative degree of adjectives; adverbs of frequency; ordinal numbers; modal words можно/ надо/ нельзя; verbs мочьand уметь; possessive and demonstrative pronouns.

  • talk about following topics: travel, life style, virtual life, city, hotel, public holidays, culture, life experiences,
  • count to 1 000 000,
  • tell the dates and telephone numbers,
  • understand, ask and answer questions related to subjects being learnt,
  • read and understand texts, approx. 400 words long, containing up to 3% unfamiliar words, and answer questions related to them,
  • write essays 9-11 sentences long, on subjects learnt: travel, hotel, life experiences.

  • Grammar: verbs of motion in the present and past tense; reflexive verbs in the present and past tenses; nouns, adjectives and pronouns in the genitive case; use of construction уменябыл...; pronoun свой; animated nouns in the accusative case; aspects of verbs; complex sentences with relative pronoun который.

  • read, without a dictionary, and understand relatively difficult texts, approx. 600 words long, containing up to 5% unfamiliar words and syntactic constructions on subject learnt, and answer questions related to them,
  • write essays 14-16 sentences long, on subjects learnt: free time, healthy life style, work.

  • Grammar: imperative; constructions with чтобы; nouns, adjectives, and pronouns in the instrumental case; verbs of motion with the prefixes; aspects of verbs of motion; negative pronouns with –ни; irregular verbs in the present and past tenses; transitive verbs of motion.

UNLPE PREPARATION WORKSHOP

The preparatory course includes:

  • Conversation practise (discussions as well as monologue speech)
  • Written language practise e.g. essays on various topics
  • Enhancement of listening skills e.g. interviews and news
  • Grammar revision

Objectives: This workshop is a preparatory for the UNLPE. The programme includes oral and written preparation, grammar revision and comprehension.
