UNOV Protocol and NGO Liaison Office

The Protocol and NGO Liaison Office of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) provides protocol services to the UN entities under the auspices of UNOV/UNODC, including the Director-General of UNOV/ Executive Director the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC). It also interacts with the Permanent Missions and Observer Offices to the United Nations Office at Vienna and United Nations counterparts worldwide.

The UNOV Protocol and NGO Liaison Office applies UN protocol rules and procedures to various diplomatic forums, meetings, ceremonies and events involving missions/ observers, NGOs, IGOs and their representatives in the UNOV headquarters and abroad. The rules, procedures of diplomatic protocol applied by the UNOV Protocol and NGO Liaison Office is aligned with those of the Protocol and Liaison Service at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Among the responsibilities of the Service are the following:

  • Responsible for all protocol related matters involving the DG/EG
  • Liaise with permanent missions, NGOs and host country authorities
  • Arrange presentation of credentials of newly appointed Permanent Representatives
  • Provide advice on protocol and organizational matters to multiple stakeholders
  • Planning, coordination and execution of official events in the Vienna International Centre
  • Provide external relation services to the Host Country and liaise with other Organisations within the UN system
